This is mock SF, it seems. As such I cannot appreciate it very much, since I never was much into serious SF. The book mocks religion, politics and commerce too, which I understand better. The dialogue is striking. In it I find some real gems, in the spirit of traditional English dry humour. Like in chapter 5:

Ford stood up. ‘We’re safe’, he said.
‘Oh good’, said Arthur.
‘We’re in a small galley cabin’, said Ford, ‘in one of the spaceships of the Vogon Constructor Fleet.’
‘Ah’, said Arthur, ‘this is obviously some strange usage of the word safe that I wasn’t previously aware of.’

Or in chapter 31:

‘Now’, said Benjy mouse, ‘to business.’
Ford and Zaphod clinked their glasses together.
‘To business!’ they said.
‘I beg your pardon?’ said Benjy.
Ford looked around.
‘Sorry, I thought you were proposing a toast’, he said.
