“Wanderer above the sea of fog” by Caspar David Friedrich (1818). File from English Wikipedia.
This cannot be a coincidence. I believe John Lennon was familiar with Friedrich’s painting already when he studied art in Liverpool, and for sure when the Beatles stayed in Hamburg he saw it in the Kunsthalle.

Girl and boy interrupted

with 2 comments

Astrid Kirchherr (Sheryl Lee): Will you come back?

Stu Sutcliffe (Stephen Dorff): I’ll write.

Astrid: I don’t like letters!

Stu: I’ll write anyway.

Astrid: I have to see your eyes when you talk to me.

Stu: You don’t have to open them. You can throw them in a drawer, and then when I come back, you can open them and have a laugh!

From the film Backbeat by Iain Softley (1994).

Mending up the damage – partly

The tower ruin of the Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche stands as a memorial of WWII and is one of Berlin’s landmarks. Now they are “refreshing” it, so it can still stand there as a ruin, without parts of it falling down on the street walkers. It is all covered up during the work, and there is information how you can give support. Keep together, eh. (“Haltet zusammen”) There is though another possible pun that they missed.
“Fugenpate” means patron of joints. It could also mean patron of fugues. But there is no mentioning of music at the project.

In the Tiergarten in Berlin there is a gas lantern museum consisting of 90 various lantern posts collected from many cities. Splendid!

My opinion on monarchy

I am glad that we have a King of Sweden, and a successor who is Crown Princess today. Thus we avoid the hysterical business of presidential election that they have in some countries, and the dull unknown representative figures that they have in other countries.

Other names, other languages

I thought about nicknames, that kind of nickname which is your first name in another form. In Swedish we prefer them to have two syllables. A guy named Bo becomes “Bosse” and a girl named Josephine is spoken of as “Jossan”. The English-speaking however,  most often they have only energy enough to speak ONE syllable: Ed for Edward, Meg for Margaret, and so on. How are the customs in German, French or Italian, I never really thought of it before?
