People you knew introduce you to people you knew

with one comment

An old literary friend of mine, from the time when I had literary ambition myself, just messed me by a recommendation from another friend whom I met long ago in the world of classical language studies, during the time when I thought of a scholarly career. It turns out that the link between all three of us is an interest in India. This series of coincidences could have happened IRL (as they say), but that would have taken much more time.
Since I started using the internet I always see it as an extended life. You may be unable to see much people because of work or economy, but you can “see” them all anyway. Now go and see these two interesting writers that I have talked about here:
Tomas Löfström of Sweden and Francesca Diano of Italy.
Someday we may meet again – in Chennai?

Bond bound

James Bond does not wear a cummerbund with his tuxedo, but if he should want to, what would we recommend?

Grey with a little silver in it?

Or off-white?

Tuxedo update

Since my writings on party outfit get some attention every now and then, I am happy to show some improvement!
I found a pleated shirt at a close-down sale. It hides the buttons. When you wear a cummerbund you don’t button the jacket. I also found this bow tie and a black one, reasonably priced in second hand stores. Much better than those I manufactured myself from plain ribbon:

For a cummerbund you need a shawl longer than yourself:

Have a nice time!

A passage to and from India, or: I buy curry powder but I mix my garam masala myself

with one comment

The best thing about internet communication is that you find people who you never would find otherwise, they are far away but still you feel they are near, because they share thoughts and experiences that you feel acquainted to.

Like this young woman in India, the big city of Chennai which we used to call Madras, she talks about anything or nothing, big or small, go ahead and read!

History of the cummerbund – part of party outfit

leave a comment »

This is the original cummerbund: a long shawl tied around the waist. Soldiers in the Indian colonial army had it with their uniform. Their British officers took it up and brought it to the rest of the world. Kamarband in Farsi means “tied waist”. Very aptly, I bought this shawl in the Stockholm shop Indiska.
