Another twist of the “carpe diem”

with 10 comments

 Every day we have is one more than we deserve. Said by news reporter Warren Justice (Robert Redford) to his wife (Michelle Pfeiffer) as he leaves for Panama where he later gets killed by terrorists. From the film Up Close & Personal (1996).

Once Below A Time

Let’s go away from Westminster then, time will show how much the change is worth, and into the landscape of imagination. At my daily commuting travel I carry with me the volume of collected poems by Dylan Thomas. I read one or a couple of poems on every tour. Beautiful but unintelligible. I understand any word, I grasp the grammar, and still I feel far away from the deeper sense of these writings. I believe I am nearing the borderline of what one as a foreigner can learn of another language by one’s intellect, while all that which you can feel if you have grown up with that language is still beyond. Remember that the poet was very young when he first got attention, and maybe he kept the childish attitude to his language all along?

A tale of … ?

Once upon a time there was a time when the to be was not to be, and that was exactly the time when nothing happened.
This is a “nonsense aphorism” or the first line of something, a reply to Holden Caulfield, I don’t know.

There will not be much time for supper, because I have choir practice tonight. A toast at some pub afterwards will do!

A promise for every day of the year

Die Red’ ist uns gegeben, The power of speech was given
Damit wir nicht allein To us not to live alone
Für uns nur sollen leben Just for our own sake
Und fern von Leuten sein; Far from all others;
Wir sollen uns befragen We should ask questions
Und sehn auf guten Rat, And listen to good advice,
Das Leid einander klagen, And speak up among ourselves
So uns betreten hat.

About our sufferings.
Was kann die Freude machen, What good comes from a joy
Die Einsamkeit verhehlt? That is hidden in loneliness?
Das gibt ein doppelt Lachen, When you smile, tell your friends
Was Freunden wird erzählt. To double the smile.
Der kann sein Leid vergessen, You may overcome your pain
Der es von Herzen sagt; If you tell it from your heart;
Der muß sich selbst zerfressen, You will gnaw yourself away
Der in geheim sich nagt.

If you keep it a secret.

Two stanzas from Lied der Freundschaft ( Song of Friendship ) by Simon Dach, 1605-1659. This baroque poet could have been forgotten, were it not for Johann Gottfried Herder, who in the following century reprinted some of his poems in the great anthology Stimmen der Völker in Liedern ( Voices of Nations through their Songs ).
