Merganser

I have seen the Merganser merganser (Swedish: storskrake) a couple of times in the tiny inlet near my home. This is the first time I have any decent pics.

Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man

Johan Tobias Sergel, the famous neoclassical sculptor, sometimes drew himself as an overweight drunkard. Portraits of him by others are scarce. Imagine my surprise when in a temporary exhibition I saw this charming portrait by his friend, Lorens Pasch the younger. The Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, Sweden, owns it but keeps it normally hidden.

Near my home there is a narrow inlet from the Baltic, called Svindersviken. Almost every morning before breakfast I take a walk along it. Another being which also feels at home there is this one. A few days ago was the first time I saw it keeping still and not flying away when I came. Are we getting friends?

World´s longest book stall

leave a comment »

Once a year, since 25 years, under the auspices of the municipal board for culture. The Drottninggatan street is crowded normally, and this day (August 16) very very crowded. Around 1 km length of second hand book sellers as well as literary societies, publishing companies, and a few writers trading their own work.

Neeps and tatties allright, and a little paprika beside. If haggis can be found in Stockholm, it is expensive I think, so I’ll have “Smålands isterband” which is somewhat similar but milder.

Double walking sticks

When I got trekking poles some years ago, I started looking for any accessory that would enable you to carry the poles and have your hands free when riding a bus, walking into a shop and such. I found nothing, so I tried to manage with constructions of my own. Some kind of strap was the idea.

Now however another solution appears. Poles that can be folded and unfolded, still keeping the correct length that you have adjusted. I haven’t tried them yet. Seem promising though.

Some daily commuters and me, just a wanderer, gather to embark this old steamer which has got a new life as part of the public transport around Stockholm.
